mail call
Once upon a lifetime ago I worked in college admission counseling—on both sides of the desk. I traveled with and later welcomed and worked with those who were endeavoring to match hopeful students with their best college option. I loved the work and I fostered some lasting, important friendships that remain to this day.
A handful of years ago, when I got the kind of sick that requires chemo, there were ‘out of the woodwork’ connects that showed up in love and support. People I hadn’t connected with in years decided to amaze me with the kind of care that knows no bounds of years or life paths. One of those hearts hasn’t let up since. There are holiday cards, ‘just cause’ touch bases, and notes like today’s mail call that remind me—through her shining example—to act upon the thought and show up in the now.
Maureen is a special breed and I’m the luckiest to call her a friend, sage, and inspiration in my life. She’s buoyed more days than I’ve been able to convey, she reminds me of the irreplaceable good that is a handwritten note in the mail.
“Never miss an opportunity to tell someone how important they are,” today’s card reads.
That will be my guide this week… to act upon the thought, heart tug, and sentiment. Send the note, make the call, script the text, share the love.
